Say Hello to the Sassholes

We often post about our lovely “A-holes” on the farm and receive a lot of questions about them so we thought we would share their story with you today. Several years ago Vic wanted to get chickens for the farm and Rog adamantly said “we are not getting chickens”. So…..one day Vic went to the feed store to get horse supplies and the nice young man behind the counter talked her into taking home 4 baby geese that someone ordered but never picked up. She figured they weren’t chickens so it was ok to bring them home. The young man told Vic that they wouldn’t require much care and would live on the island on our pond (he lied). She brought them home and hid them in the front dining room…then made Rog a nice dinner for when he got home from work. While eating dinner, he heard several “peeps” coming from the other room and Rog asked “did you get chickens??” Vic replied, “of course not, you said no chickens so I got something so much worse”. The 4 babies started out in the house since it was too cold to put them outside, they would swim in the tub and eventually relocated to the garage where Rog built them a pen until they could go outside. Once outside, we quickly learned that they had decided Vic was their goose momma and would not wander down to the pond without her. So…Vic would take their food down to the pond and they would make the long walk with her. She was hoping they would get in the pond and swim on their own….this was not the case. Vic would get in her canoe and paddle around the pond, with her 4 geese happily following her. This is what I like to call the “pre A-hole” phase. As they got older, the female began laying eggs so Vic would collect them every morning so we didn’t add to our goose population. She apparently missed a few eggs and sure enough, they multiplied. Once the babies hatched, the older geese became very protective of the babies and were no longer the sweet geese they used to be. This is where the term “A-holes” started. The two remaining geese, A-hole 1 and A-hole 2 are both males and are about 13 years old…they spend their days together in the pen with the goats and mini horses…and they make sure to chase us around, hissing and trying to bite us, every chance they get. So now you know the story of the A-holes.
